Here at Church Street, we don’t do a lot of sales — once a year, we do one MASSIVE sale to celebrate our anniversary and thank our customers for supporting us. Our birthday is July 5th (we turned three years old this year), and we usually do the sale through July so all our customers can participate, even if you’re spending a couple of weeks in July at the lake or the beach.
Well, that means the sale should be over tomorrow. But Cal’s on vacation, so we’re making our own rules! In addition to all the partying we’re doing (naturally — nobody parties like a bookseller parties), and between stabbing little pins into a voodoo doll we made of Cal (it’s smoking a toy cigarette and reading a tiny Wendell Berry novel), we had an impromptu staff meeting this morning and decided to keep the sale running through the weekend until Cal gets back.
Here’s the deal: When you buy a red bookmark title (most of them are bestsellers like Flash Boys by Michael Lewis and The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith/J.K. Rowling), you get to pick out a paperback of your choice. Any paperback, for free. It’s a great way to pick up some summer reading, and if you’re a real planner you might even find some gifts for Christmas. Maybe for Christmas, I’ll get Cal a copy of Flash Boys to apologize for that whole voodoo doll situation.
