I really disliked this book at first. The main character seemed irritating and petty to me. I like I was being asked to be on his side, and I didn’t want to be. But Ha Jin is a master, and I should’ve trusted that he was leading me someplace great. The Boat Rocker is a slim little book, but it’s a tremendous reflection on modern journalism and freedom.
