Why Your Small Business Marketing Isn’t Working: And What to Fix First | Laine White

Laine White is a Marketing Consultant and Innovation Strategist at Uptick Marketing in Birmingham and the AAF Birmingham 2025 Marketing Director of the Year. She joined Carrie Rollwagen at Localist Lab to share the three-question framework she uses to diagnose why small business marketing fails — and what to fix first.

Show Notes

Small business marketing fails for a surprisingly consistent reason — and it’s almost never about budget. In this episode of The Localist, recorded live at Localist Lab in Birmingham, marketing consultant Laine White of Uptick Marketing shares the three-question framework she uses every day to diagnose exactly where small business marketing goes wrong and what to fix first.

Laine walked a live audience at Saturn in Avondale through three questions every piece of marketing needs to answer: Is it clear what you are selling? Is it clear why they need to buy? And is it clear what they need to do next? The session includes real website and ad examples showing what these mistakes look like in practice, a live Q&A with small business owners in the audience, and honest answers to common questions about Google ads, AI in marketing, value propositions and where to focus when your budget is limited.

If you have ever felt like your marketing is not connecting, this framework gives you a way to look at everything you are putting out — your website, your social posts, your ads — and immediately see where you are losing people before they have a chance to buy.
